5 Winter Skincare Tips You Need To Know
While we believe in treating your skin all throughout the year, it’s really important that you give your skin some extra loving during the winter months. For me, winter nights are spent snuggled up on the couch with a cup of tea (herbal, of course!) & a face mask on while watching my latest Netflix obsession. Winter is like a reminder to slow down & take better care of yourself.
However, winter can also bring a lot of changes to your skin & skincare routine. I have had a lot of clients in the salon recently who want to start their skincare journey or adjust their skincare routine for the change of season. So - I’ve put together my top 5 winter skincare tips that you should know.
I’ve kept these tips as universal as possible so they aren’t skin type or concern specific, so if you need more personalised advice or a skin consultation with one of our Skin Therapists at Mee & You Beauty, please call 0447 976 720 or get in touch via email (hello@meeandyoubeauty.com.au) or Instagram @meeandyoubeauty.
So, let’s get into my 5 winter skincare tips!
Tip 1: Daily SPF is STILL important in winter
Unprotected sun exposure is detrimental to your health but it is also one of the leading causes of ageing! In Brisbane especially, the UV Index stays well above levels in which sun protection is required all year round. There is an app called SunSmart which will allow you to access the UV index at any time, so if you’re a fellow skincare nerd, get the app & make sure your skin is protected from the sun all year round.
Tip 2: Up your Essential Fatty Acid consumption
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are your internal moisturisers - they work on moisturising the skin cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis. When these skin cells reach the surface, you are left with beautiful plump, hydrated cells, & who doesn’t want that!. With our natural sebum production slowing down in winter, it’s more important than ever to give your skin cells the support they need! You can find EFAs in so many foods - nuts, chia seeds & avocado are a few of my favourites.
Another incredible source & my daily go-to is Bestow Beauty’s Beauty Oil because it is a super easy way to ensure you’re getting all the EFAs you need on ta daily basis. PS - you can grab the Bestow Beauty Beauty Oil in the salon!
Tip 3: Tweak your skincare routine
Did you know that when the temperature drops below 8 degrees, your oil glands slow down or in some cases, stop the production of sebum completely? Switching up some of your products will ensure you can maintain healthy & balanced skin all winter long (even if it is a relatively short season here in Brisbane!).
Try switching from a foaming or gel cleanser to a cream or milk-based cleanser & use a richer moisturiser, particularly at night when your skin is in its reparative state. Plus, if you aren’t already into the oils, winter is a great time to invest in a good one to add to your skincare routine. However, keep in mind that not all oils were created equally. If you have Dry Skin try an avocado or wheatgerm oil & if you have Oily Skin try an apricot or jojoba oil (jojoba oil mimics human sebum, so it is perfect for beauties who are prone to breakouts). If you are not sure what your skin type is, you can read my blog post on understanding your skin type here.
If you’re not sure where to start or want a personalised recommendation, we offer custom oil blends in store - they are made to order so they will suit your skincare needs & concerns perfectly (they’re just $68).
Tip 4: Sleep with a humidifier on
This tip is super old school I know, but hear me out. A humidifier will help put moisture back into the air & alleviate symptoms caused by the dry winter air. A humidifier is also great if you’re feeling under the weather!
My favourite thing to do is to pop a couple of drops of essential oils into the humidifier to boost immunity & clear the sinuses - my go-to oils for this are eucalyptus & frankincense!
Tip 5: Love your GUT
Gut health is an integral part of having glowing skin all year round! Did you know up to 70% of the cells that make up your immune system reside in your gut wall? A healthy gut means a healthy body & a healthy body equals GLOWING SKIN! I’m obsessed with Bestow Beauty’s Get Love Powder at the moment - I’ve been adding it into my morning smoothies daily! If you’re concerned with anything gut health related I would recommend speaking to a naturopath & if you’re in Brisbane too, I cannot recommend Shannon Stokes (@shannon_stokes_naturopath_) enough!
